BHCs treat the whole person, focus on the health and wellness of the individual and family, and are generally available for services the same day they are needed.

BHCs also provide short-term interventions, screenings, and referrals when needed. BHCs can help with many issues, including depression, stress, grief and loss, and parenting. If further services are needed, the BHC will make the necessary referrals.

To meet with a BHC, either ask your Primary Care Provider for a referral or call directly for an appointment

The KANA Pharmacy serves KANA beneficiaries who use the KANA Clinic for their health care needs. We provide prescription medications ordered by KANA providers, medication counseling services, and operate an anticoagulation clinic service. We will counsel you on the important aspects of proper medication use, safety, and risks. Please ask when you have medication questions.

The pharmacy has a new Automated Medication Refill system that allows the pharmacy computers to interact with an automated telephone system. This system is a convenient way for patients to request refills and check on the status of an existing prescription. This system will also let patients know if the refill is too early to be filled, if the refill is expired and the patient needs to contact a provider, or if the refill has been processed and when it will be available for pick-up. Patients can access their prescription information even when the pharmacy is closed, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Patients are encouraged to request refills through the automated refill system at least 1 day prior to needing to pick up the medication.  Village patients can request refills by calling the automated refill system or by going through the community health aide. The more this system is used, the shorter wait times will be for new medications and the more time pharmacists will have to spend reviewing your medications with you.

Patients receiving new medications should be seated in the lobby following appointments. Once the pharmacy receives the prescription and has it ready the patient will be informed. Patients that are not able to wait may return later to pick up the medication. The pharmacy has a private counseling room to review your medications with you in a confidential manner. The pharmacy also utilizes a ScriptPro dispensing system to help with counting of many of the high use medications in the pharmacy.

Patients are not charged for the medications received here. Third party payers (i.e. Medicaid, Medicare, and insurance companies) can be billed by the pharmacy. Please help by providing insurance information needed to bill third party payers to the registration desk.

The KANA pharmacy does not fill prescriptions from providers outside the KANA clinic. If a KANA provider refers you to a specialty provider, follow-up with your primary care provider at KANA for your prescriptions to be ordered.

Community Health Aide Program (CHAP)

The Community Health Aide (CHA) Program is a network of roughly 500 Community Health Aides/Practitioners (CHA/Ps) in more than 170 rural Alaska villages. CHA/Ps work within the guidelines of the Alaska Community Health Aide Practitioner Manual (CHAM), which outlines assessment and treatment protocols. CHA/Ps are part of an established referral relationship that includes mid-level providers, physicians, and the Alaska Native Medical Center. In addition, providers such as public health nurses, physicians, and dentists visit villages to provide services to patients and clients in collaboration with the CHA/Ps.

KANA receives funding to employ Community Health Aides in Akhiok, Larsen Bay, Port Lions, Old Harbor, and Ouzinkie. KANA currently employs 11 Community Health Aides and provides them with all of the necessary training required of the position. Training centers are located in Anchorage, Bethel, Nome, and Sitka. CHAs take part in four sessions of training, each lasting three to four weeks. Between sessions, the CHAs work in their clinics completing a skills list and practicum. Completion of the four-session training curriculum and successful completion of a clinical skills preceptorship and examination qualify the CHA as a Community Health Practitioner (CHP).  CHA/Ps at any level of training may obtain certification by the Community Health Aide Program Certification Board.
